Almost a Century has passed from it's Origin till Today. The Home has been the site from which Medical Care has been given to the community... "WELCOME TO OUR HOME" |

"Dr. Jacob H. Sherman practiced general medicine in Manchester for many years. His office and residence, which he built were at present day 3332 North Main Street, which is the location of the Long View Nursing Home. Dr. Sherman was active in activities of the Carroll County Medical Society. A former patient described him as an able physician, a little brusk, who, on occasions, was capable of very descriptive language. During the stock market crash and economic depression of the 1930's, Dr. Sherman experienced severe financial losses." I note the widows walk, a look-out point used for scanning the countryside for the signal signifying the need for a Doctor. It has been said on a clear day, Emmitsburg was visible from this vantage point. From this our name was derived, Long View Nursing Home.
"Dr. Robert F. Wells graduated from the Baltimore Medical College, Baltimore, in 1892. In his early career, Dr. Wells engaged in practice at Gamber (Mechanicsville) and Westminster. Following this early experience, he moved to Taneytown. His wife, a native of Manchester, more than likely prompted his move to Manchester. Dr. Wells purchased Dr. Sherman's residence and office located at 3332 North Main Street where he developed an active practice. Dr. Wells was a member of the Carroll County Medical Society and attended it's meetings regularly. He settled in Manchester and engaged in practice there for many years. Dr. Wells died on June 1, 1944, age 78, of gangrene of the cecum and peritonitus."
Dr. Wells son married Kathleen, a R.N. When her husband became ill, Kathleen quit her job in Laurel to care for him in her father-in-laws home. As a means of additional income Mrs. Wells cared for other sick people from the community in the home. This was the beginning of the "Nursing" home. The facility was one of the first nursing homes in the State of Maryland in 1946.
After the death of her father-in-law (1944) and husband (1948); Kathleen continued her care of others in the home. Her success resulted in the first addition to the old house in 1950. This two story building contained patient rooms on the first floor, personal and staff living quarters on the second floor and a basement for medical equipment.
Newman Twigg married Kathleen in 1950 and assisted her in the business. In 1955 another building was erected; the first floor for patients and the ground floor an apartment. The occupancy totaled 42.
The Emergence of the Tarutis family
Ralph G. Tarutis was employed as a Nursing Home and Hospital Advisor for the State of Maryland, Licensing and Certification Division. He had surveyed Long View and knew Mrs. Twigg wanted to retire and sell the business. Martha J. Tarutis was employed as the Supervisor of Nursing at Rosewood State Hospital and was ready for a change.
Soon, July 1, 1962 Martha and Ralph purchased the facility and embarked on a new business. Many changes took place over the years: The purchase of modern hospital-style furniture, renovation of rooms and increased staffing.
Mr. Tarutis continued his state position until his retirement in 1969. He then began to work at Long View as the Co-Administrator and continued in this position until his death in 1985.
In the begining; Mrs. Tarutis was the Administrator, Housekeeping Supervisor, Dietary Supervisor, some days the Cook or Laundress, Accountant, Charge Nurse and at home a wife and mother. Suffice it to say times were hard; hard work and long hours.
In November of 1969 the second floor of the building built in 1950 was renovated for patient rooms and an elevator. The patient census increased to 56. By this time many more professional staff had been hired and Mrs. Tarutis was able to spend more time as the Administrator.
During the 1960's the concept of a family facility was created. After school and during the summer the children, Sandra and Gerry, both worked at the facility in various capacities. "Whatever Mom told us to do, we did." In fact, a snow day from school, meant work at Long View.
Gerald pursued his college studies and a law degree, while Sandra worked as a Nursing Aide. Then she continued onto college for a Bachelor of Nursing degree. Both children graduated from the University of Maryland.
In 1972 the facility grew again, this time a three story building composed of dining/activity room, dietary department and a storage room was built. During the 1970's Gerald Tarutis moved to Seattle, Washington and established his attorney practice. He continues to reside in Seattle but provides legal counsel for the facility. Sandra became a Nursing Home Administrator and worked part time at the facility in various capacities. During this time Sandra became the mother of two children, Tamara Lynn (1975) and Sara Elizabeth (1980). The family business had expanded again, but in a slightly different way!
In 1989 we began our most recent adventure, a major addition and renovation project that took two years to complete. The Original Victorian Home was completely renovated for Administration Offices and the patients relocated. A three story addition was built that is the home to 80 patients, expanded laundry, Activities Room, Beauty Salon, Physical Therapy Room, Nursing and Housekeeping Offices and Lobby. The interior was designed to create a home-like atmosphere. The existing three patient halls were renovated to include air-conditioning, carpet and other interior amenities. Our interior courtyard is an asset for wanderers and an area of landscaped beauty.
Another addition occurred in 1988, our family business grew when Lee Martin, Sandra's husband became Physical Plant Manager. His expertise in construction assisted Martha and Sandra during the construction project. Today, we are proud to announce the third generations are active in the family business. Tamara is currently employed as the administrative assistant. Sara received her master’s degree in social work and is working at the facility in social work services.
Martha Tarutis retired from her position as Administrator and then fulfilled the position of CEO and owner until her death February 10, 2005. She will be remembered as the historian of experience and wisdom to her family. Sandra has now taken over the complexities of the business and is currently the Administrator of the facility.
